The Council of Constantinople (John Chrysostom)

ÀåºÎ¿µ 2008-11-08 06:18:31, Á¶È¸ : 150

(2) John Chrysostom

1) He was born in Antioch in the middle of the fourth century. He was brought up by his Christian mother widowed when only twenty.

2) He was baptized and after that a while devoted to the monastic life.

3) He lived for several years in a cave outside Antioch and damaged his health by his austerities.

4) He returned to Antioch due to his ill-health, where he became deacon and presbyter, and then he studied under Diodore of Tarsus. (cf. allegory)

5) He was the most famous preacher at that time, who preached the Word of God in the Bible and sermons on specific subjects.

6) He was not especially gifted in theological matters-his sermons are above all practical and devotional.

7) He was exiled on trumped-up charges-in 403 and, after a brief return, in 404. In 407 he was forcibly marched to another distant site of exile, and died as a result.
