Four Views on Salvation in a Pluralistic World (14)

(4) Christian Particularism and Special Revelation:

If a particular revelation might be provided by God, and if its authenticity is historically well-supported, then what are the biblical data concerning the nature and scope of salvation?

(A) Major Biblical Consideration

¨ç Acts 4:12:

"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved" (NRSV).

(1) "There is no one else"
(2) "For there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must saved"

(*) This is Peter's address, who was a particularist:

(1) Peter uses the broad phrase "under heaven" to indicate how extensive his exclusion of all other names actually is.

(2) Peter does not restrict the scope of those to whom this name is given, as he says, the name is "given among mortals."

(3) Peter uses the important term "must" (¥ä¥åῖ) as Jesus says to Nichodemus "must (¥ä¥åῖ) be born again" (John 3:7)

(4) This understanding of the passage is strengthened by the presence of a fourth term, "name." (restrict and universal).

¨è John 3:16, 18:

¡°For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life...Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

(1) In this verses the following words must be considered:

(*) Exegetical problem of the verse 16 and verse 18:

(1) "Whoever" (God's universal salvific will)
(2) "Believes" (particular divine arrangement)
(3) "Jesus' name" (condition of salvation)

(4) Inclusivists must hold that something is the proper object of saving faith. Since these verses stress belief - and belief always has an object - what is the object of faith, if not Jesus?

¨é Romans 10:9-15:

"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.(10)For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.(11)As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."(12)For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,(13)for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."(14)How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?(15)And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

(1) In this verses, the need for salvation is discussed in detail. All humans without exception are guilty sinners and are therefore deserving objects of God's wrath (1:18-20; 2:1; 3:9-24; 5:12-21).
