Expository Preaching (A definition of expository preaching) (07)
Gustaf Wingren says, "Preaching is not just talk about a Christ of the past, but is a mouth through which the Christ of the present offers us life today"(Gustaf Wingren, The Living Word, quoting by Stott, Between Two Worlds, p. 108).
Hendrich Bullinger says, "The preaching of the Word of God is the Word of God"(Hendrich Bullinger, Second Helveic Confession, 1966).
In preaching, the rule of Christ must be established in hearts and lives. Today any pastors seem to preach the gospel in their styles not according to the rule of Christ. But preaching must be implemented according to the rule of Christ because it should be the declaration of the Word of God, namely the Word of Christ.
The Word of Christ has itself the rule of Christ and the rule of preaching. First, believing and obedient response must be the result of the work of the Spirit. The result of the work of the Spirit must bear nine fruits as in Galatians 5:22: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness"(Gal. 5:22),
And second, Scripture justifies the expectation that at least sometimes our preaching will be productive. Preaching must produce the fruits of the Word of God through the Holy Spirit by the the fulfilled redemption by Christ on the Cross. This is very important task of the preacher. The preacher must, therefore pray that the Holy Spirit will bless the preaching of the Word of God, the Word of Christ(Rom. 10:17).
Preaching must be incarnation preaching through the work of the Holy Spirit such as the Word of God(λόγος) to be the Word of Christ(ρήμα), the incarnate Christ(Rom. 10:17; John 1:14).
