Expository Preaching (Step Four: Organizing the Sermon) (04)

Preacher should work out the sub-points. The sub-points should all support their respective main divisions. And he should apply three functional questions to each main divisions. And he should ask whether or not they have fully response to his preaching.

Will they understand this? What will it take to make it clear? Will they believe this? What will it take to convince them? How should this affect them? And is there something they should do, some way they should change?

Preacher should formulate an introduction. What is the purpose of an introduction is to introduce the minister to the congregation, and to related the congregation to the sermon. What are the characteristics of a good introduction is that it gets attention, introduces a need, and orients the audience to what he has to say two common mistakes: one is that preacher begins with background about the text, and the other that the introduction doesn't actually introduce the sermon about to be preached.

Preacher should formulate a conclusion. There are some common-mistakes in concluding sermons. Those are that some sermon end too abruptly, and wander off into uncertainty, and take an unexpected detour at the end, and end twice, and let the listener off the hook.
Some shapes conclusions can take: recapitulation of the main points of the sermon, the last point to serve as the conclusion, use of shock and stimulation(surprise), asking of a penetrating question, use of a strong quotation, and telling a powerful story that drives home his point.
