Expository Preaching (How to Apply the Sermon to the Listeners) (04)

Preacher should seek to understand the world in which His people live. He may get the information of the context in which he is ministering.

Preacher must anticipate objections and sympathetically clear them away. He should make sure they can see that he is saying is not his own idea, but is actually what the text says, and let them know that his aware of the other idea, that he even has some sympathy with it(if he does) and that he has rejected it. When refuting another position, state it fairly.

Preacher should study the sermons of those who excelled at application. He may read other preacher's sermons which is excelled at application as many as he can.

Preacher must aim at making every sermon the occasion for people to have dealings with God. It can be summarized as follows:

Firstly, preacher may look for three things in the study of any passage of Scripture: (1) a revelation of the need of human beings: that aspect of the human condition which called forth the passage. (2) a revelation of the gracious nature and activity of God that meets that need. (3) the response that is expected. Secondly, preacher may look for parallels today to the human need revealed in the text. Thirdly, the process visualized.
