Sunday corporate worship services were discouraged in the US and in Korea because social distancing was necessary to prevent the Covid-19 virus from spreading. This measure wreaked havoc in many traditional churches because for many members, they were deprived of their only church activity, attending Sunday worship service. Church ministries, dependent on paid church staff, essentially stopped when they were prevented from visiting their members or running church programs.
House churches were not as affected because they consist of many small communities who meet at members¡¯ homes and are led by lay pastors. Since house church members are like a family with weekly meetings just a part of their lives, they were able to meet online without too much difficulty. Ministry was also able to be carried on without disruption because Shepherds simply continued caring for their members as they had been doing. Because children are accustomed to worshiping with their parents during house church, attending online Sunday worship services was not particularly challenging.
Many Christians don¡¯t fully understand the communal aspect of the church because the Christian faith has been privatized. But community is everything to God. God uses a community, rather than individuals, to save the world. He formed Israel during Old Testament times and the Church during New Testament times for that purpose. To be ¡°saved¡± means to become a member of the faith community, with the purpose of restoring the fallen world.
The house church is such a mission community. This community withstands adversity and overcomes crises. Early churches not only endured oppression, but eventually conquered the Roman Empire through house churches. The Chinese churches not only survived the persecution under the Communist regime after Mao Zedong came into power in 1949 but thrived through house churches.
We expect Korean churches will face more crises in times to come. The second wave of the coronavirus epidemic will certainly come. Anti-Christian groups will continue to attack the Church. I hope many pastors see the strength of the house church during the current Covid-19 epidemic and prepare for future crises by converting their traditional churches to house churches.
