ÀåºÎ¿µ 2008-11-08 06:21:20, Á¶È¸ : 154

(4) The Desert Fathers (Christian Hermits)

1) Antony, one of the desert Fathers, appeared in the waste of the Egyptian deserts in the 280s. He was pioneering a new way of life.

2) He was solitary ascetic, one of a number of holy men who lived on the outskirts of towns and village, trying to dedicate their lives to God.

3) In Syria, people believed that the power of God could be directly witnessed in the lives of these men.

4) Symeon Stylites spent decades perched on top of a pillar, arms outstretched, ignoring the crowds that jostled for a better view 60s feet below. When he died, no one realized for several days.

5) The hermits together with the spiritual theology being developed by

Origen, Augustine and others were part of a great mystical movement that would later blossom in the medieval monasteries to produce some of the most profound writing of all time.
